I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill

Last summer, we packed the whole family including the inlaws into the car and drove for an hour to go blueberry picking. It was the end of the season and the bushes were fairly picked over. Nevertheless, five of us picked 11 pounds. We froze most of them, and they lasted until spring. So we decided we would do it again, albeit minus the inlaws. This time, we were determined to pick before they were picked over. A few weeks ago, we set about to go blueberry picking. As far as we could tell, the place we went before was out of business.

Mr. Tot investigated alternatives and we started driving, looking for a place named Blueberry Hills. Quaint, right? Despite his use of his precious iphone, we never found it. How does THAT happen? But we did see a little sign for picking blueberries. There were 3 or 4 guys standing around talking, and no joke, every single one of them had a mullet, so we have dubbed their place Mullet Farms. They charged a whopping $1/lb and while the blueberry patch was small, it was very fruitful. I could slide my fingers down a branch and get a whole handful of yumminess, which was great, because it was blazing hot. 18 pounds later, we headed home. But we decided after non-stop gobbling, some freezing, and 2 mouth watering pies later, that 18 pounds at $1/lb wasn’t nearly enough. So 2 weeks later, we headed back and picked another 26 pounds, no thanks to Blondie who wimped out after a mere 20 minutes. What good is it to have kids if you can’t put them to work? NO BLUEBERRIES FOR YOU, BLONDIE! Or at least, no blueberry pie!!

Unfortunately, our bargain blueberries lost their bargainess?, bargainality?, …. when the state trooper pulled up behind us on the way home. D’oh!!

WillyWonkaSo silly me, once the berries were picked, I thought the work was done. Ohhhhh nooooo. Now we had blueberries everywhere!! Let the cleaning, sorting, eyes crossing, and cursing begin. Do you know how long it takes to clean that many blueberries? MONTHS!!! Or maybe it just felt that way… The in-laws did all the cleaning last year- a belated and newly appreciative thank you to them!

After we all ate enough fresh berries to turn into Violet Beauregarde ‘s greedy cousins,we then baked 87, 3 pies, peach blueberry crisp, blueberry pancakes, blueberry candy (jam gone awry), blueberry jam and still had 48 pounds a frickin LOT of blueberries to freeze. Yeah, that’s SIX gallon bags of blueberries…

Oooh! What fun! I don’t think we have blueberry patches (groves? orchards?) here though.

    We would have helped! 🙂
